EXCERPT
»A picture has a guise and plays a part. If one imagines that a picture is a ship, it has a function it must fulfil. It has to have cabins, a captain, perhaps a restaurant, an engine room. It must have passengers, even stowaways, and it has to be able to rescue shipwrecked people. A picture must have space. The most famous ships are perhaps those that sank: the Titanic, Rainbow Warrior, Vasa the man-of-war, the Estonia. Another famous vessel was called the Ark. Noah's Ark was the ship in which the world was saved. It was filled with people and animals and drifted on the seas when the great Flood came. A picture should be like the Ark. It should last for the entire journey, and contain something important.«
